Youth killed in 'gunfight' after detention
A young man was killed in a reported gunfight in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district early Thursday after detention by police.

Police claimed deceased Mohammad Hanif, 38, was a listed drug trader of the Home Ministry. He was a resident of Natmurapara area in the upazila.

Teknaf Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said they in a special drive detained Hanif on Wednesday morning.

As per his confession, police along with Hanif conducted a drive in Malbari Marine Drive area early Thursday to recovered drugs and arms.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, cohorts of Hanif opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gun battle. 

After a short gun exchange, police found Hanif bullet-hit and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, the OC said.

The body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue, OC Pradip Kumar added.
