ACC interrogates Papia, husband
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday interrogated Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman alias Sumon.

Shaheen Ara Mumtaz, deputy director of ACC, interrogated them at the ACC hq after they were taken there from Keraniganj Central Jail at 3:40pm.

On December 14, the court granted them a three-day remand. Today may be the first day of remand.

Shaheen Ara Mumtaz filed a case against Papia  and her husband with the ACC’s Integrated District Office Dhaka-1 under Section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act-2004.

Based on the case statement, the ACC has discovered that the couple amassed illegal wealth worth Tk 6,24,18,000.

On February 28, the ACC launched enquiry against Papia and her husband on charges of accumulating illegitimate wealth.

In the event, Papia has been accused of acquiring illegitimate assets worth Tk 6.24 crore.

Previously August 4, the ACC filed the case against Papia and her husband Sumon on charges of amassing unlawful wealth.

On Oct 12, a Dhaka court sentenced expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Papia and her husband to 27 years imprisonment each in an arms case.

Rab raided two flats belonging to Papia and Sumon on February 23, a day after arresting them from Dhaka airport.

Counterfeit notes and foreign currency worth around Tk 2.5 lakh were seized from their website during the drive.

About Tk 58 lakh was recovered from both flats on Indira Road in Dhaka owned by the couple and a presidential suite at a five-star hotel in the administrative centre.

In addition to the lavish flats, Papia and her former Chhatra League leader husband own two more flats and two plots worth around Tk 2 crore in Narsingdi and several luxurious cars.

Three cases were filed against them - two at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Acts and another with Airport Police beneath the Special Powers Act-1974.

Two days after Papia's arrest, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the government hasn't let any criminal from inside or beyond your ruling party off the hook.

Asked if the names of Papia’s patrons will be revealed, the minister said there is no reason not to do so.

The federal government has taken a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ against any crime, and regulations enforcement agencies are taking action accordingly, the minister added.

Mentioning that the law enforcement agencies have been given the freedom to take action against criminals, Quader said, “Action should be taken against criminals irrespective of their identities. Through the tenure of this government, criminals of the ruling party have to face trial unlike previously.”
