11 Bangladeshis killed along border in a month: BGB
Eleven Bangladesh nationals have been killed along the border in one-and-a-half months since December 25, last year, said the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).
"Some 11 Bangladeshis have been killed along the border with India from December 25, last year till February 5," informed BGB Director (Planning) Lt Col Syed Ashiqur Rahman at a press briefing on Wednesday.
He also said Information are being exchanged between the Indian Security Force (BSF) and the BGB. Issues relating to border killings have also been discussed at the DG-level talks, he added.
"Some of smugglers in border areas are identified while many are not. We've kept a close watch on those involved in smuggling. Besides, we've made arrests whenever they tried to smuggle goods outside country. Media was also informed about the natter," said the BGB director.
bdnews24.com adds: The border protection force also confiscated smuggled goods and drugs worth Tk 970 million in the last month, according to Ashiqur.
The confiscated drugs include 723,685 yaba pills, 40,741 bottles of banned cough syrup Phensedyl and liquor, cannabis, heroin as well as other injectable narcotics.
It also seized 14.5 kg of gold, jewellery, cosmetics, clothing, sculptures, firearms, 21 trucks, 6 pick-ups, a private car, 11 auto-rickshaws and 54 motorcycles.
The BGB also detained 272 smugglers along with 38 Bangladeshi and two Indian for crossing the border illegally. Legal action was taken against them, he said.
