BGB forms full-fledged BOP at St Martin’s
In a bid to strengthen vigil in the St Martin’s Island under Teknaf upazila, the country’s southernmost part, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is setting up a full-fledged border outpost (BOP).

The necessary heavy weapons and equipments have already been sent there to that goal.

Besides, all preparations are being taken to ensure safety of the BOP, said Lt. Colonel Sarker Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, acting director of Teknaf 2 battalion Border Guard Bangladesh.

He said, “Saint Martin is an isolated island separated from the mainland, the southernmost part of Bangladesh. Thousands of tourists visit the island every year. So this island needs security”.

Moreover, the government has decided to set up full BOP in a bid to ensure border security, prevention of drug smuggling, refrain of Rohingyas from going to Malaysia illegally, the BGB official added,

But alongside the BGB, coastguards and navy members will also perform their duty on the island, he also said.

Earlier on Sunday (April 7), heavily armed members of BGB have been deployed on St. Martin's Island after 21 years as per government’s directive.

BGB members started performing their duty in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal from onwards, Mohsin Reza, public relation officer of BGB’s headquarters, told Banglanews.

BGB had been deployed on St. Martin's Island up to 1997.
