More BGB, RAB men deployed in risk-prone upazilas
The Election Commission deployed additional members of Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion in 24 risk-prone upazilas following Baghaichhari gun attack.
The decision has been taken ahead of the 3rd phase of the 5th upazila parishad elections to 117 upazilas set to be held on Sunday (March 24).
“We’re on alert. Additional RAB and BGB members were deployed in upazilas which seem to have problems,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed briefed media at the Media Centre of Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka on Saturday (March 23).
“Besides, additional executive magistrates will oversee irregularities during polls,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed also said.
EC came up with the decision following gun attack in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati that clamed 8 lives and 24 people are still undergoing treatment at various hospital including Combined Military Hospital (CMH) of Dhaka.
The incident happened on the way while EC officials were returning with materials of 2nd phase of the 5th UP elections on March 18.
This time, UP polls will be held in five phases at 492 upazilas.
The 1st phase of the 5th UP polls to 78 upazilas was held on March 10.
And, 2nd phase of the 5th UP elections to 116 upazilas under 15 districts held on March 18.
