Rupnagar canal to come to be connected with Turag River: DNCC mayor
Dhaka North City Company Mayor Atiqul Islam on Wednesday said Rupnagar canal, located in the city's Mirpur area, will be linked with the Turag river.

"I want to reach the Turag river by boat through Rupnagar canal from Rupnagar residential place," he told reporters after viewing the canal.

The DNCC mayor said there was huge garbage in Rupnagar canal. However, many 50-60 personnel cleaned the 2-km long canal for 15 days.

So as to beautify the 60-foot width canal and its own surrounding areas, trees will be planted on its banks at first and bi-cycle lanes and walkways will be established there, he said.

The locals will generally be benefited because of its canal-cleaning and beautification works as several educational institutes including Monipur University, Commerce College and an exclusive university are in the area and the students may use the walkways and bi-cycle lanes.

Atiqul Islam urged the persons to remove their illegitimate structures from the banks of the canals, in any other case the DNCC will conduct eviction travel there.

He said the city dwellers will be able to pay their holding taxes online from March next as the DNCC is working on it.

Afterwards, the DNCC mayor visited BRTC bus depot in Mohammadpur region, Tajmahal Eid-surface and Shaheed Park floor there.

He said the boundary wall of the bus depot will be dismantled to widen its adjoining roads found in a bid to help ease traffic congestion there.
