HC orders judicial probe into death of lawyer under custody
The High Court on Wednesday ordered judicial probe into the death of lawyer Palash Kumar Roy in Panchagar district jail on April 26.
Responding to a writ filed over the incident, an HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil came up with the order.
Earlier on Monday, Supreme Court lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Suman filed the writ in which the Home Secretary, the IGP (prisons), Panchagarh jail authororities and other concerned were made respondents.
On May 5, Supreme Court Bar Association secretary Barrister AM Mahbubuddin Khokon alleged that lawyer palash was torched to death in a planned way inside the prison. He also demanded judicial probe into the incident.
On March 25, Palash and his family members began hunger strike in front of Panchagarh and his family members demanding withdrawal of a ‘false’ case filed by Kohinoor Chemical Company.
Later, they formed a human chain on the road near Sher-e-Bangla Park.
At one stage, Palash made derogatory remarks against the prime minister and the local administration at the human chain.
Angered by the comment, local poeple handed him over to the police from the human chain.
The same day, one Razib Rana filed a case with Sadar Police Station against Palash. He was, later, sent to jail through a court order.
