'Gorbini Ma' award conferred on nine mothers
May 12 was the International Mother's Day. On the occasion Universal Medical College Hospital hosted the sixth annual 'Gorbini Ma' award ceremony to honor the mothers of the people who have contributed immensely to the country's culture and development.Nine mothers were honored at the ceremony held at RAOWA Convention Centre-2 in the city's Moakhali DOHS area.  

With the initiative taken by Managing Director of the hospital Dr Ashish Chakraborty this year 'Gorbini Ma' honors were given to Mariam Begum, mother of popular film actress Poppy, Uzala Begum, mother of popular folk singer Momtaz MP and Anjuman Ara, mother of actor Afran Nisho. 

Presided over by Universal Medical College Hospital chairman Priti Chakrabarty, DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam graced the function as special guest. Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, who was the chief guest, handed over the awards to the proud mothers.

Monwara Begum, mother of state minister for health and family welfare Dr Murad Hassan, Apple Rani Saha, mother of journalist Munni Saha, and Kazi Mahfuza Begum, mother of pilot Captain Zakariya, were also honored with the 'Gorbini Ma' award. 

Besides, Zaheda Khatun, mother of DIG (Highway Range) Md Atiqul Islam Asia Rahman, mother of Dhaka University microbiology department head Prof. Sabita Rezwana Rahman, Amena Kahatun, mother of RAB executive magistrate Md Sarwar Alam, and Sima Sarkar, mother of Hridoy Sarkar, were also felicitated likewise. The artistes shared their thoughts on the honor that their mothers received.

Momtaz said, "This is an emotional moment for me. Nothing can be compared to a mother. On this International Mother's Day, I wish to express my utmost respect to my mother. I wish love and respect to every mother in the world. Mothers are blessings for us and with that blessing, I want to move forward." Popy said, "It is a memorable day for me. 

I have received many awards in my life, but my mother receiving this award is my greatest achievement in life."  "It was my parent's dream that I should join the defense forces, but I turned out to be an actor. They were not happy with my decision, but my mother still inspired me to pursue my dream and here I am, because of her inspiration. Now my family is happy. Still, I cannot express how much I love my mother," Nisho said.
