DNCC kitchen market fire under control
The fire that broke out at Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) kitchen market in Gulshan-1 early today has been brought under control.

On information, 20 fire-fighting units rushed in and doused the fire around 8:25am, said senior station officer Khurshid Anwar of fire service and civil defence.

Army and Navy members also joined the fire service teams in dousing the fire.

However, no casualty was reported, said the official.

It is not still clear what caused the fire.

Major Shakil Newaj, director (operation and maintenance) of Fire Service Headquarters, said that it took long time to bring the fire under control for water crisis. Meanwhile, a five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident which has been asked to submit the report within seven working days, said the official.

According to traders, no one stayed at the market overnight. The market was locked and guards were posted at the gate.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam visited the spot around 8:10am.

Market employees present on the scene told journalists that the market had not opened for business and there was almost no one inside it when the fire broke out.

The fire at the DNCC kitchen market comes just two days after the deadly fire at Banani FR tower that claimed the lives of 25 people.

A similar fire on January 3, 2017, gutted 300 shops at the same market though no causality was reported.

The recommendations came after the incident were not implemented by the market authorities. There is no fire extinguishing system in the market.
