Principal accused in murder of four members of a family group at Madhupur upazila in Tangail district has been arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-12.

The 27-year-old Sagar Ali was arrested from Brahmanbari area under Madhupur upazila at about 4:45pm on Sunday. He is the son of Magbar Ali of Brahmanbari area.

Tangail's RAB-12 CPC-3 Company Commander Major Abu Nayeem Mohammad Talat said the accused confessed the killing of four family during primary interrogation.

The deceased Abdul Gani was a money-lender who used to provide loans on interest. The accused Sagar Ali had money-lending business with Abdul Gani. The accused didn't repay his loans many times. On Tuesday, Sagar Ali went to Abdul Gani to lend Tk 200. But, Abdul Gani refused him to lend the money and drove him away without paying any amount.

Major Abu Nayeem Mohammad Talat said the accused Sagar Ali felt humiliated at the behaviour of Abdul Gani. Then he hatched an idea with an accomplice to kill Abdul Gani and loot his money.

In line with the plan, Sagar together with his accomplice visited Abdul Gani's house at about 10:00pm on Wednesday. His accomplice took drugs to create Abdul Gani unconscious from a local bazaar. As the accused were known to Abdul Gani, these were permitted to enter his house.

RAB official said Sagar and his accomplice first made Gani unconscious. As other members of the family were sleeping, it became easier for the killers to create them unconscious. Later, the accused and his accomplice hacked all the family members dead with an axe and using their sharp knives.

"Following the killing, the killers took away the valuables with them and fled away locking the house from outside," he said.

In line with the confession of the killer, RAB-12 members later seized sharp knives and looted goods from the house of his sister at Brahmanbari. RAB in addition has launched a manhunt to arrest the accomplice of Sagar Ali.

The bodies of Abdul Gani, 52, his wife Tajiran Begum, 42, son university student Tajel, 17 and daughter Sadia, 9, were found at Abdul Gani's house at Masterpara Uttara Residential Area under Madhupur Sadar upazila on Friday morning.

Gani Mia's elder daughter Sonia Begum filed a case against the unidentified accused with Madhupur Police Station on Friday night. The bodies were delivered to Tangail General Hospital for postmortem on Saturday. After the postmortem, the bodies were handed over to the family on Saturday afternoon. Later, the bodies were buried at the family graveyard of Abdul Gani's father's house at Golabari in Madhupur.
