Controversy shrouds DU ‘Gha’ unit entry test results

Controversy surfaced centring the results of Dhaka University (DU) ‘Gha’ unit (combined unit) entry test marred by question paper leak allegation acknowledged by the university authority.

Anomalies surfaced in pass rate of the test which were published on Tuesday as the tally reach in highest point in last 20 years breaking all the records of the past as some student secured records marks, claimed university students.

In an analysis, it is shown that 26.21 percent students secured pass mark in 2018-19 academic sessions whereas it was 14.35 pc in 2017-18, 9.83 pc in 2016-17, 9.91 in 2015-16 sessions.  

Sources also said that maximum students who secured position between hundred in merit list of ‘Gha’ unit (combined unit- Science, Arts, Commerce) failed to secure pass mark in their respective units.

The first position holder in ‘Gha’ unit from Business Studies unit got 114.30 out of total 120 marks, in Bengali 30 out of 30, in English 27.30 out of 30, in general knowledge 57 out of 60. But he failed to secure pass mark in his respective ‘Ga’ unit under Business Faculty where he got only 2.40 out of 30 in English part.

In another case, student who stood first position in ‘Gha’ unit from Science unit securing 109.50 marks, failed in his respective ‘Ka’ unit under Science faculty where he got only 43.75 marks.

Contacted, Sadeka Halim, dean of social science faculty, also co-coordinator of the controversial test, said these anomalies did not prove that they were securing position in the merit list by forgery.

She further said that they would take stern action against the fraudsters if they got sufficient evidence of forgery.

Earlier on Tuesday, brushing aside any chance of retaking the test, DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman said that they had no right to cause hassle to huge number of aspirants again and they could not take any action without sufficient evidence.

Acting VC Prof Nasreen Ahmad said, “We are concern about it and that is why we have held a meeting with all concerned administrative bodies today in the evening”.

Prof Mohammad Samad, Pro VC (administration) said that we are collecting information from press media and will match with original information.    

Earlier, on Tuesday DU published the result of ‘Gha’ unit intake test result amid barrage of criticism, acknowledging the question paper of the controversial test which held last Friday was leaked prior to the exam.

The question paper of Dhaka University admission test, held on Friday, was leaked 43 minutes before the tests commenced, the admission seekers and guardians said.

Fourteen images of handwritten question papers of Dhaka University Gha unit entry tests were spread on social media around 9:17am on Friday, 43 minutes prior to the beginning of the exam.

After scrutinising the images and the original question paper provided at the exam halls, it was found out that 72 MCQ questions (19 in Bengali, 17 in English and 36 in general knowledge section) got matched.

The university authorities shortly after Saturday midnight filed a case under Digital Security Act against six named accused and many unnamed accomplices alleging that they had leaked 72 questions of ‘Gha Unit’s admission test on Friday.

The case was filed with the Shahbagh police station after the six named accused, all from Bogura, were arrested at the Doyel Chattar on the DU campus.

The suspects face the charge of cheating using digital and electronic devices and recording and transferring information after illegally entering into computer system.
