DU observes Black Day
Teachers, students and staff of Dhaka University on Monday observed “Black Day” marking the “repression” on the university’s teachers and students during the military-baked caretaker regime in 2007.
Wearing black badges, they formed a human chain at Aparajeyo Bangla of the university led by Pro VC (administration) Prof Dr. Mohammad Samad demanding punishment of the culprits who assaulted teachers and students.
The DU authorities postponed all classes form 11:00am to 1:00pm and a discussion was held at the teachers-students center (TSC) of the university in the morning where university Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman presided over the function.
On August 20, 2007, a clash ensued between some DU students and army personnel centring a football match on the campus. Protesting at the incident, students took to the streets and demanded withdrawal of an army camp from the university.
The then government imposed a curfew on the divisional cities and arrested some university teachers and students.
