AL takes lead in first phase of municipality polls
Ruling Awami League supported mayor individuals secured victory in 18 municipalities out of 23 in the 1st stage of the municipality polls held on Monday.
Election Commission suspended the consequence of mayor post in Chalna municipality in Khulna after BNP candidate Abul Khyer died of coronavirus right before the start of the voting.
The voting started at 8.00am simultaneously at 24 municipalities in the united states and continued till 4.00pm without any break.
Although the voter turnout was a lttle bit low in the first hours of the voting, it continued to improve as your day progressed. The people especially the new voters exercised their franchises with festivity.
This is the first time that the voting was held using electronic voting machine (EVM) in the municipality election.
Of the 23 municipalities, AL backed mayoral applicants won in 18 municipalities while BNP in two municipalities and independent candidates won the others three.

AL nominated prospect ABM Golam Kabir Khokan won at Betagi municipality on Barguna while Golam Kabir at Dhamrai in Dhaka, Saiful Islam Saif at Madan on Netrakona, Jahangir Alam Malik Khokan in Chuadanga, Md. Ramjan Ali, Kajiul Islam in Kurigram, SM Iqbal Hossain Sumon at Gafargaon in Mymensingh, Abul Imam Md. Kamran Chodhury at Borolekha in Moulvibazar, Tariqul Islam in Kushtia, Jakia Khatun in Panchagarh, Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury Tutul at Badarganj in Rangpur, Lukman Hossain Dakua at Bakerganj, Gias Uddin at Ujirpur in Barishal, Monir Akhter Khan Toru Ludi at Shahjadpur in Sirajganj, Bishwajit at Dirai in Sunamganj, Abbas Ali at Katakhali in Rajshahi, Shakwat Hossain Saku at Chatmohor in Pabna, and Bodiul Alam at Sitakundu in Chattogram.
Winning BNP candidates
BNP nominated applicant Md. Farid Ahmed gained at Shayestaganj in Habiganj and Al Mamun guaranteed success at Puthia in Rajshahi.
Winning independent candidates
Independent prospect Md. Anwar Hawlader guaranteed victory at Kuakata municipality while valiant freedom fighter Ekramul Haque won in Thakurgaon and Md Mahamud Alam Liton won in Dinajpur.
