Restriction on public gatherings an ominous sign: BNP
Strongly protesting the restriction along holding rallies and public meetings in Dhaka urban centers without prior police permission, BNP Wednesday said this ‘anti-people’ move can be an ‘ominous’ sign both for politics and democracy.

In a statement, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The government's such a decision goes against the constitution and fundamental rights of individuals.”

He urged the federal government to immediately withdraw the decision.

According to the constitution, the BNP head said any citizen and organisation gets the to assemble freely.

“But it’s unfortunate but true that since the present federal government has come to power, this right of people enshrined in the constitution has got either been snatched or perhaps restricted or manipulated at different times, that is a violation of the constitution,” he observed.

Fakhrul said the federal government offers again violated the constitution by suddenly imposing a good restriction by the DMP on arranging rallies and public meetings by political functions, religious and community organisations without prior permission.

He alleged that the federal government is trying to regulate politics and snatch people’s rights found in the brand of permission and different conditions. “It (govt) can be narrowing and blocking the standard path of politics.”

Fakhrul also alleged that the federal government offers taken the approach ‘snatching’ people’s basic and constitutional rights only to protect it from a good mass-movement and open public wraths by ‘abusing’ the administration.

Earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Law enforcement (DMP) urged most to avoid holding any specific meeting, rally and taking right out any procession found in the administrative centre without prior permission.

In a press statement, DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam also warned of taking legal action if such a program is held defying the obtain.
