2 brothers killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’
Two suspected drug peddlers have been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred in Chawkbazar area of Teknaf upazila on early Friday (July 17).

The deceased are- Md Faruk, 37, and his brother Azadul Haque, 24, sons of Aminul Haque from Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram.

Police claimed to have seized 20,000 bits of yaba tablets, two locally made firearms and 11 cartridges from the spot.

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das told Banglanews: “Based on information distributed by two detained accused, police conducted a drive in Chawkbazar area to intercept a drug consignment. Sensing existence of law enforcers, the smugglers opened fire on police men.”

“Police members fired back in self-defence which in turn triggered a shootout. At one point, armed smugglers fled the scene leaving two of their own behind with bullet wounds,” the OC said.

The injured smugglers were quickly taken up to Teknaf upazila health complex initially and then used in Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital where they succumbed with their injuries, said Pradip Kumar. 

He also said that three policemen were shot through the shootout and received treatment from Teknaf upazila health complex.
