Jubo League activist killed in AL factional clash
A local Jubo League activist was killed and three others received severe injuries in a clash between two groups of Awami League over establishing supremacy in Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place in Samity Bazar area under Ghopal union around 3:00pm.
Deceased Sirajul Islam, 30, was a follower of the upazila Awami League's joint general secretary Julfikar. He was the son of Abdul Quader, a resident of Nijkunjara village in the upazila.
Local sources said local UP chairman Azizul Haque Manik, and Julfikar have been at loggerheads over lifting sand from adjacent area to Samity Bazar.
Following the dispute, five to six followers of Aziz suddenly attacked Sirajul sitting at a shop in the bazaar and opened fire.
Hearing his cry out, supporters of Julfikar rushed there and both groups clashed, leaving four, including Sirajul, bullet-hit injured.
They were rushed to Chhagalnaiya Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared Sirajul dead.
Among the wounded, two were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) as their condition deteriorated.
The body, however, was sent to Feni General Hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, aggrieved leaders and activists of the party blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram highway for an hour protesting the incident.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Following the deadly clash, all shops of the market remained shut.
UP chairman Aziz told a Bangla online news portal over phone that the incident happened because of internal conflict between Julfikar and Parvez. He or his men were not involved with the incident, he claimed.
Chhagalnaiya Police Station officer in-charge Mesbah Uddin confirmed matter. Police have visited the spot but could not know yet how the murder occurred, he added.
