Goalanda Police Station ex-OC, his wife sentenced to jail terms
A court in Dhaka has sentenced former Goalanda Police Station Officer in-charge (OC) Saiful Islam and his wife to jail terms in two cases filed for amassing wealth in illegal means and concealing wealth statement.

Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge Court 4 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict on Wednesday in presence of the convicts in the dock.

OC Saiful was given to seven years' jail while his wife Zakia Islam Anu to two years' imprisonment in the case of gaining wealth by illegal means.

The court also fined Saiful and Zakia respectively Tk 3,00,000 and Tk 1,00,000, in default, to suffer respectively one year, and three months more in jail. 

Besides, the court sentenced Saiful to another seven years' imprisonment in the case of concealing wealth statement under two articles of Anti Corruption Act 2004. 

Under article no. 27 (1), the court sentenced Saiful to two years' imprisonment, fined Tk 50,000, in default, to serve six months more in jail. 

And under article no. 26 (2), he was awarded five years' imprisonment, fined Tk 200, 000. He will have to suffer one year more in jail if he fails to pay the fine..

Mozahar Ali Sarder, assistant director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), lodged the case of amassing asset by illegal means against Saiful And his wife Zakia with Ramna Police Station. 

According to the case statement, ACC gave notice to Saiful and his wife to submit their wealth statements.  

On September 29, 2009 Saiful submitted his wealth statement before ACC, hiding assets worth around Tk 42,55,021.

Zakia gave the information about Tk 31,45,000 of wealth.  

An allegation raised against her as there was no source for Tk 2,50,57,786 and keeping wealth by illegal means into his possession.   

The AD also lodged the other case of concealing wealth statement from ACC against Saiful. 

On August,4, the court ordered to frame cahrges against them and to start a trial.
