AC sales triple as temperature soars
The sales of ac units have tripled year-on-year in April and May as people rushed to retailers to remove the scorching summer.

Local assembly and manufacturing also have made ACs inexpensive for the bulging middle income as the purchase price came down.

April, May and June will be the peak time for the outlets retailing ACs while the temperatures rises from March. Practically 90 % of the ACs can be purchased during the quarter.

In recent weeks, the temperature has hovered around 39 degree Celsius, and it went past 42 on April 24 in Jessore.

The annual require for ACs rose 20 per cent on average within the last six years.  Samsung posted 300 % higher revenue in April. Walton authorized 450 % progress in the January to April period when compared to same period last year. Transtec's sales have doubled since April 15.

The sales rose 250 % for Esquire Electronics and 100 % for Pran-RFL's Vision company.

Md Shariful Islam, merchandise supervisor (digital appliance) of Samsung, said the business clocked about 300 per cent higher growth in today's season.

Samsung is providing a 12.5 % flat price cut, free instalment, and three after-item sales services.

Nurul Afsar, associate managing director of Electro Mart Ltd, the distributor of GREE AC, said people depended in ACs to safeguard themselves from the rising mercury.

"Moreover, the purchase price is affordable for the middle-course. As the middle-category is expanding, the revenue of ACs is increasing."

Existing ACs possess advanced features like saving strength and protecting the rooms from dust particles and harmful virus and bacterias, he said. "This is helping AC sales even through the coronavirus pandemic."

Walton has introduced some new types of inverter ACs with a dual defender, ioniser, and UV (ultra-violet) health care features to keep carefully the room free from any virus or bacterias, said Augustin Sujan, senior additional director of the company.

Currently, Walton is running Digital Campaign Season-11. Under the campaign, customers are receiving a free of charge freezer or sure cashback. "Therefore, the sales have risen," Sujan said.

Walton has geared to sell 175,000 Air conditioning units in 2021.

At present, the neighborhood company is developing and marketing a lot more than 27 models of 1 tonne, 1.5 tonnes, and 2 tonnes split-type AC.

Saikat Azad, assistant basic manager for advertising at Transcom Digital, said the company posted about 250 % higher revenue in April and May.

Through the lockdown period, the preparing for house delivery was enhanced this season compared to last year, which will drove the AC sales up, he said.

Transtec Digital retails ACs of Hitachi, Panasonic, Whirlpool, Samsung, and Transtec brands.

Raziur Rahman, senior manager for marketing communication of Singer Bangladesh, said regardless of the issues posed by the pandemic, the product sales of Singer ACs were reasonably very good during this summer.

"The demand has raised since we have started offering flat 10 % discount on all types of inverter and other ACs." 

The growth of AC sales was impressive this summer in comparison to 2020, said Md Manzurul Karim, general supervisor of Esquire Consumer electronics, the authorised sole distributor of Japanese giant electronics brands General and Sharp.

Retailers say the product sales of ACs can reach seven lakh systems in 2021 due to the entire year is hotter when compared to previous year. The marketplace size will expand to Tk 5,000 crore, from Tk 4,500 crore in 2019.
