7 DU students suspended over ‘offensive remarks’
The Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Monday suspended seven students of Psychology department for different periods over making ‘offensive remarks’ about a teacher of the department on Facebook.

University proctor office issued a notice regarding the decision on July 30, which was taken at a syndicate meeting held on July 10 as per recommendation of the university Disciplinary Board (DB).

A meeting of the board held on June 11, chaired by Vice chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, found the students guilty after scrutinizing a probe report conducted by the Psychology department, according to the notice.

The department formed a probe body in an academic meeting of the department after they came to know about the matter from some of his colleagues, a teacher of the department told reporters seeking anonymity.

Suspended students are- Khairun Nesa, Minhazul Abedin for one year while Umme Habiba Tanzila, Fatima Akter, Samia Mahzabeen, Abdullah Hil Bakee, Aditi Sarker were handed suspension of six months. All of them are second year students of the department.

On November 26 last year, Khairun Nesa gave a Facebook post in which she was seen expressing grudge over ‘someone’ and the others suspended students expressed their rage in same style through commenting on the post.

“I have controlled my anger after trying so hard. Otherwise, all body parts and bones of that bald headed man [Takla] would have been smashed. For the time being, I have managed to control myself a bit from tearing the question paper. I would have got more peace if I could throw the question to his bald head,” wrote Khairun Nesa in her Facebook profile.

Khairun Nesa said she did not either mention name of any teachers or gave the post addressing any teachers. 

“I was angry as I had a bad examination on that day and posted that out of frustration. I was also treated under a doctor over my depression problem,” she added.

In another development, the psychology department asked its students not to give any post regarding academic affairs on Facebook, reads a notice of the department. The department would take action if any student breaches the order, it added.
