Pro-AL panel sweeps DU senate registered graduates’ election
Awami League-backed ‘Ganotantrik Oikya Parishad’ (GOP) swept the election of representatives of registered graduates for Dhaka University Senate, bagging 24 posts out of 25.
Dhaka University (DU) Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Nasreen Ahamd, also election commissioner, announced the result at the senate Building of Dhaka University in the afternoon on Sunday.
Pro-AL panel bagged 24 posts while BNP backed ‘Jatiyatabadi Parishad’ panel got only one post, won by former DU prof VC Prof AFM Yususf Haider.
Pro AL GOP winning candidates are Rupali Bank Managing Director Ataur Rahman Prodhan (12,967), DU Teachers Association President Prof ASM Maksud Kamal (12,046)¸ freedom fighter M Farid Uddin (11,968), Bangladesh Federal Union Journalists (BFUJ) President Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul (11,924), DU syndicate member SM Bahlul Maznun Chunnu (11, 596), GOP president Md. Abdus Samad (11,568), DU Sociology Prof Zinat Huda (11,557), Jagannath Hall provost Prof Asim Sarker (11,335), BSMMU Prof M Iqbal Arslan (11,220), DU Social Science faculty dean Prof Sadeka Halim (11,167), World Teachers’ Federation President Mahfuza Khanam (11,120), DU English dept. Prof Tajin Aziz Chowdhury (11,085), DU prof Emran Kabir Chowdhury (11,033), freedom fighter AHM Enamul Hoque (10,942), Krishi Bank GM Liakot Hossain (10,838), Sonali Bank Bangabandhu Parishad leader Md Alauddin (10,786), DU prof Sayed Humayun Akhter (10,739), DU senate member Ramendu Mazumder (10,681), Janata Bank AGM ABM Badruddoza (10,672), Np Global Bank Chairman Nizam Chowdhury (10,528), DU Science faculty dean Prof Abdul Aziz (10,512), Md Abul Bari (10,452), Ranjit Kumar Saha (9,967) and ABM Nasir Uddin (9,818).
A total of 22,642 voters cast their votes, from among 43,997 votes where 1,260 votes were cancelled.
A total of 80 candidates from three panels- AL-backed ‘Ganotantrik Oikya Parishad, Pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Parishad panel and leftist panel ‘Progoti Parishad’ and independent candidates raced in the DU senate registered graduate polls to elect 25 representatives to the DU senate that comprises 105 members.
Neither Progati Parishad candidate nor any independent candidate came out elected in the polls.
Prof Nasreen Ahmad said, “The election was held peacefully none complained to the election commissioner”.
On Saturday, the final-phase election of registered graduate representatives to the Dhaka University senate was held on the university campus.
Earlier, two phases of the election were held at 42 polling stations outside Dhaka on 6 and 13 January.
In the last election in 2013, Awami League-supported panel Ganotantrik Oikya Parishad bagged 18 seats while BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Parishad bagged seven seats.
