Tailback on Dhaka-Ctg highway continues
A long tailback that created on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Monday has been continuing for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, causing untold sufferings to the people who fast in severe hot weather.

A 33-kilometer tailback was witnessed from Putia of Cumilla's Daudkandi upazila to Meghna Bridge area in Munshiganj's Gazaria upazila.

The gridlock started on the busiest highway from Monday 12:00 midnight.

Daudkandi Highway Police Station officer in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said goods-laden vehicles got stuck in Chattogram Port for several days due to cyclone Fani.

Excessive pressure of those goods-laden vehicles towards the capital from the Chattogram Port and construction works of the second bridge on the Meghna River mainly caused the gridlock.

Getting stuck in the long tailback, many drivers and passengers are seen sleeping inside vehicles in Pennai, Gouripur and Amirabad areas of Daudkandi.

Yunus Bhuiyan, a passenger of Dhaka-bound 'Himachal Paribahan' and hails from Cumilla's Chandina upazila, said that he boarded in the bus around 6:00am to see a doctor in Dhaka. But he got stuck in the gridlock till 10:00am.

Zahirul Islam, a passenger of a Dhaka-bound bus, said it takes normally one-and-a-half hour to reach Dhaka from Cumilla. But, now it is taking around 10 hours.

Chattogram-bound 'S Alam Paribahan' driver Md Shamim said passengers, specially women, suffer most as they face difficulties to respond to the call of nature due to the traffic jam.

Farzana and Sonia Akter, students of Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain College in Daudkandi, said they had to walk around nine kilometers to attend class.
