Iqbal Sobhan underscores needs for journalists' safety
The Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury on Tuesday said the government should ensure the safety of journalists for the sake of free and objective journalism.

"Practice of responsible and objective journalism never possible in an unsafe environment. So, the government should ensure safety for journalists," he said.  

Iqbal Sobhan, also the former Media Advisor of the Prime Minister, told journalists after visiting Mujibnagar Mausoleum in Meherpur district in the morning.

Apart from army, police and administration, journalists work relentlessly for the sake of democracy and the state, he said adding that but, no culture of safety has yet been created for journalists like other professional.

"Now a days, safety of journalists is a must for democracy, free thinking, freedom of speech and independent journalism," he said.

Mujibnagar UNO Nahida Aktar, Meherpur Press Club president Al Amin Hossain and secretary Rafiqul Alam welcomed the Observer editor.

Iqbal Sobhan along with his other colleagues placed floral wreaths at the alter of Mujibnagar Mausoleum and observed a minute of silence.

National Press Club vice-president Omar Faruque, former general secretary of Dhaka Journalists' Union Quddus Afrad, Kishore Bangla editor Mir Mosharref Hossain were, among others, present.
