HC wants hospitals’ explanation over death of infant twins
The High Court (HC) on Monday ordered authorities of three city hospitals to submit their explanations within 48 hours for not providing timely medication to infant twins, creating their deaths with no treatment.

A HIGHER Court division virtual bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order against authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Mugda Islamia Hospital, also issuing a rule in this regard.

The court in its rule, asked the authorities to describe as to the reasons it shall not declare their inaction to the end shall not be declared illegal.

The court developed the order as the Supreme Court MLSS Md Abul Kalam, father of the dead twins, brought the bodies of his child right to the court premises, demanding justice for his babies.

“Md Abul Kalam’s wife SayeraKhatun went into labour today and the Supreme Court staff was trying to take her to Mugda Hospital. Sayera gave birth to the twins in the CNG auto-rickshaw. As Kalam took them to local Islamia Hospital in Mugda, they sent them to Shishu Hospital in Shyamoli, saying they don’t have necessary equipment to treat the new-born twins,” Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told newsmen.

When Kalam took his babies to that hospital, in addition they sent them back, saying they don’t have any ICU bed vacant and would want Taka five thousand daily for every baby, if their parents want to admit them in the overall ward.

“Kalam at that moment phoned a High Court judge, who advised him to bring them to BSMMU Hospital and contact a director there. When the indegent father went there with his babies, the non-public officer of this director kept them waiting, saying his boss was in a gathering. Kalam was kept waiting along with his newborn child still in a ambulance. But following the meeting, that director went home, without bothering to talk to Kalam. Over time, when that personal officer brought a doctor to start to see the babies, they were already dead,” the DAG added.
