HC to decide on 22 Jamaat candidates Tuesday
The High Court on Monday adjourned hearing on a writ petition challenging the legality of 22 leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami contesting the next general election with BNP's electoral symbol.

The bench of Justice Md Ashfakul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali will decide their fate on Tuesday.

Four people, including Bangladesh Tarikat Federation Secretary General Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, filed the writ petition challenging legality of the Jamaat leaders' nomination.

The Election Commission, chief election commissioner, Jamaat chief, its secretary general, the candidates and three others have been made defendants.

The High Court cancelled Jamaat's registration with the EC on August 1, 2013 following a writ petition filed by 25 people, including Chandpuri. The Election Commission finally issued a gazette notification on October 29 this year cancelling the party's registration.

Jamaat had openly sided with Pakistani occupation forces in 1971 and actively tried to thwart the Banglaees' struggle for freedom. Several of its top leaders have been convicted of war crimes.
