FF quota seekers suspend protest for 12 hours
The children of freedom fighters (FF) on Friday suspended their blockade programme for twelve hours for the convocation ceremony of Dhaka University (DU) to be held on Saturday morning.
The suspension will come into effect from 12 am to 12 pm Saturday, said DU Prof AKM Jamal Uddin, spokesperson of Mutijuddho Moncho.
For the third consecutive day on Friday the children of freedom fighters under the banner of 'Muktijoddha Sangsad Santan Command' put barricade at Shahbag intersection demanding to keep the 30 per cent quota reservation in government jobs.
Later in the afternoon, a group of physically challenged people under the banner 'Bangladesh Protibondhi Shikkharthi Oikya Parishad' also joined them.
As per their previous announcement, the protestors postponed their blockade for nine hours till 3:00 pm Friday upon the request from Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
The home minister met the protesters around 9:00 pm Thursday and requested them not to block the road on Friday since it would cause students sitting for the medical colleges' admission test to suffer.
Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles were stuck in a long tailback and many of them, heading for Science Lab, Farmgate and Motizheel, were seen diverting the route.
The government on Thursday scrapped the 46-year-old quota provision for first and second class government jobs after mass protests against 'discriminatory quota' for months.
The freedom fighters' children waged their movement in demand of the detainment of quota provision in the government jobs.
