Dr Zaid Bakht: A great economist with a mission
Eminent economist Dr Zaid Bakht has made a substantial contribution to national-level policy formulation in neuro-scientific industry, nationwide income accounting practices, development planning and general public expenditure.
The acclaimed and renowned creation economist is conducting and guiding studies in neuro-scientific development economics concentrating on trade, industry, private sector, SME development, macroeconomic management and physical infrastructures.
He has been leading the transformation of the state-run Agrani Bank seeing as the federal government recently extended the tenure for the 3rd term.
Right from the start of his part as the chairman of Agrani Bank, the eminent economist has been focusing on the inner audit of Agrani Bank to make sure financial transparency.
During the tenure of Dr Zaid, Agrani Bank is among the most top performer simply by dealing half of the total remittance transactions of most six state-run banks.
Agrani Bank contributed $1.6 billion to the economy in FY 2020-21 up to now.
Beneath the bold leadership of economist Dr Zaid, Agrani Bank has emerged as the utmost powerful lender in the public sector in terms of remittance handling.
Dr Zaid commenced his research job as an economist with the Bangladesh Institute of Creation Studies (BIDS) in 1971. Before his pension as the study Director from BIDS in 2014, he served the institute in deferent capacities.
In his illustrious study career, he led many research projects of the government and worldwide organisations like the World Bank, International Labour Organization, Asian Development Bank, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), EU, Food and Agriculture Organization, US Conference on Trade and Development and Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
He undertook many collaborative studies with foreign institutions just like the London Institution of Economics, University of Sussex, and Institute of Growing Economies in Japan.
Dr Zaid Bakht also edited more than a few volumes of BIDS Journal. He successfully performed foreign assignment as a member at the peer critique committee on regional review proposal for UNESCO Small Grant programme.
He was a federal government delegated member to UNCTAD inter-governmental preparatory committee assembly on third UN Meeting on LDC held found in New York in July 2000.
He as well represented the country in an expert group getting together with of UNCTAD on trade and agricultural sector held found in Geneva in April 1999.
Dr Zaid, a previous consultant of Eascap, was also a browsing fellow at the University of Strathclyde.
He contributed to sector review as a member of objective at ILO about rural non-farm job in Sri Lanka in 1991.
Before top rated the Agrani Bank board, Dr Zaid was a director at state-run Sonali Lender, a syndicate member at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
The eminent economist also contributed to the national level strategy as an associate of economists’ panel for the formulation of the sixth five-year plan in 2010 2010.
He was an associate of public expenditure analysis commission in 2002, the committee for review of national profit accounts in the ministry of setting up, the advisory committee for the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2001 and national committee on the formulation of professional policy in 1998.
Dr Zaid passed secondary school certificate examination in 1964 from Sylhet Federal government Pilot High School. He competed larger secondary school certificate exam from Sylhet MC College.
He completed post-graduation in economics from Islamabad University after completing graduation from Dhaka University in 1969.
In extracurricular activities in educational life, Dr Zaid engaged in debates and wants to take up tennis. In leisure, he listens to Bangla music and practices therefore. As an inspiration, he's an admirer of motivational speaker Wayne Dyer.
As traveling to professor, Dr Zaid teaches in different educational institutes including North South University and East West University. In the classes, he targets macro and microeconomics, statistics, econometrics and organization mathematics.
He's a guest speaker in MILITARY Staff College, Bangladesh Community Administration Training Center (BPATC), National Academy for Educational Operations (Naem) and the Planning Academy.
Dr Zaid was born in Sylhet in 1949. He's the son of the later Dr Jamshed Bakht, a renowned physician of Sylhet and Zebunnessa Khatun. Dr Zaid wedded to Halima Hossain and is usually blessed with a boy and a daughter.
Dr Jamshed Bakht was a captain of the Uk Indian Army in the medical core. After separation of Pakistan, he transferred to Sylhet and started teaching.
Dr Zaid led a substantial number of native and international studies. For the federal government of Bangladesh, he led the ‘content enumeration check of economical censuses carried out by Bangladesh Bureau of Figures in 2013.
He also led the analysis on ‘workplace protection and commercial relations focusing on the current status of export-oriented readymade garments sector in Bangladesh’ completed for the Ministry of Labour and Occupation in 2013.
In 2012, Dr Zaid led the analysis of the equity entrepreneurship fund for Bangladesh Lender.
On behalf of the federal government, he prepared the Bangladesh country paper for SAARC in 1997.
As an associate of SAARC Professional Group on Economic Cooperation, Dr Zaid contributed to the paper titled ‘The Scope of Growth of Economic Cooperation in SAARC Area’.
He also led the analysis of export processing zones found in 1994 with respect to the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority.
For World Lender, Dr Zaid Bank carried out a report on poverty impact of rural roads and market segments improvements and maintenance job of Bangladesh in June 2000.
As an experienced economist, Dr Zaid has numerous international publications. In 2013, Dr Zaid co-authored within an international journal concentrating on ‘Size and framework of the manufacturing industry in Bangladesh and implication for expansion and poverty.
In the international publication titled ‘Regional Integration and Economic Development in Asia, Dr Zaid coauthored a write-up on the integration of ICT industries and its own impact on marketplace access and trade focusing case of Bangladesh and India.
Asian Development Bank published the e book edited by Sultan Hafeez Rahman, Shridhar Kharti and Hans-Peter Brunner.
In another publication of Economic Development and Cultural Change in July 2009, Dr Zaid coauthored articles title the Poverty Impact of Rural Roads: Evidence from Bangladesh.
In September 2009, his overseas level book titled ‘The Developing Economies’ was posted. As a co-writer, Dr Zaid contributed to the book with Tatsufumi Yamagata and Prof Muhammad Yunus.
