Dhaka to be free from tailback, air pollution
The BNP mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Tabith Awal, yesterday declared his poll manifesto where he promised to get rid of mosquito menace in the city, curb air pollution, and ensure better traffic management. He unveiled the manifesto at a press conference at Emanuel Banquet Hall in Gulshan at 10:30am, a day after his opponent, Awami League (AL) mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam, announced his election manifesto.
The BNP mayoral hopeful's manifesto contains 95 pledges under 19 sections. Tabith promised decentralisation of citizen services at every ward. He called upon the city dwellers to cast their votes for the ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol to implement his pledges. In his poll manifesto, Tabith gave importance to improvement of public transport and waste management. Replying to a question, the BNP mayoral candidate said he would implement the manifesto with public support.
He said he would take steps to ensure the rights and security of citizens. He accused the AL-led government and mayors of their failure to control the mosquito menace and promised to tackle the issue efficiently.
“If elected, I’ll carry out mosquito-repellent activities throughout the year. I’ll also work for reducing traffic jam and take effective steps to stop air pollution in the city,” he said.
The BNP candidate sought cooperation from everyone to get elected as the next mayor of DNCC.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president ASM Abdur Rab, Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, and Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, among others, were also present on the occasion.
While carrying out electioneering in the afternoon, Tabith called upon the voters to visit polling centres with courage and resist any move to manipulate the elections. “If you don’t go to the polling centres, the opponent will be able to manipulate the elections. So, you must go to the polling centres. You are my forces,” he added.
Speaking at a roadside rally in Uttara, Tabith said that he took part in the election as part of the movement to free party chairperson Khaleda Zia and restore democracy.
