Container congestion feared in Ctg port amid small delivery
Loading and unloading of mass cargoes and containers to and from the vessels are going on as usual at the Chattogram slot, which handles 93 per cent of the country's consignments, with the perspective to keeping the source chain smooth amidst the ongoing countrywide movements restrictions.

However, just the delivery of commodity, emergency remedies and service-related materials are being allowed mainly because the Chattogram Customs House operates on a limited scale.

Officers from different departments like Traffic, Accounts and Marine have already been tasked with evaluation of the selected merchandise for launching, according to Md Omar Faruq, secretary of the Chattogram Slot Authority (CPA).

Even so, the curtailed delivery poses to create another problem of container congestion.

Around 5,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent systems) of import containers were delivered found in a day until 8am about March 26 prior to the holiday began. The quantity came down at 1,200 TEUs yesterday.

Congestion has already been created in the Kamalapur inland container depot found in Dhaka as importers aren't acquiring delivery of their items.

CPA Member Mohammad Zafar Alam confirmed it, telling the ICD has recently exceeded its capacity.

Until yesterday afternoon, 4,700 TEUs of containers were lying at the Dhaka ICD, which includes the capacity to shop at best 4,000 TEUs.

Finding zero space, they even placed about 120 TEUs import containers at the area designated designed for export containers, said Ahmedul Karim Chowhdury, brain of Kamalapur ICD.

Although situation at the port is in order as it still has enough room, it can change due to the indegent delivery, said Alam, adding that if indeed they cannot send the Dhaka ICD-bound containers they would occupy space in the port.

Transport of import-laden containers from Chattogram Interface to Dhaka ICD through railway was first suspended from Saturday afternoon to Sunday night time.

Following the last cargo train left Chattogram port for Dhaka ICD on Saturday afternoon, two trains loaded with import-laden containers were stuck at the Chattogram Goods Slot Yard.

One of the trains was thanks to begin for Dhaka yesterday evening, Shadequr Rahman, divisional railway supervisor found in Chattogram, told The Daily Superstar.
