BNP dismisses BSMMU Director’s remarks on Khaleda’s health
Turning down BSMMU Director Brig Gen AK Mahbubul Hoque’s remark that Khaleda Zia’s health condition is stable, BNP on Monday said he came up with such an observation as taught by the government.
“The director (of BSMMU) said what the government taught him. His remarks also clearly manifested that a great planning is underway to slowly kill the 75-year-old seriously ill former prime minister by keeping her in jail,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also said Mahbubul Hoque’s statements about Khaleda Zia’s treatment are ‘unwarranted, unacceptable, discourteous, and slanderous and misleading ones’. ”A director can't talk like that. The personal physicians (of Khaleda) visited her a few days back and and they didn’t find her in good shape.”
Earlier in the day, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) director Brig Gen AK Mahbubul Hoque at a press conference said the health condition of Khaleda Zia’s is stable with significant improvement in some cases. “Her condition didn’t deteriorate in any way.”
He, however, alleged that the doctors often face problem to meet the BNP chief as they do not get permission from her.
Rizvi said Khaleda’s medical board chief Prof M Zilan Miah Sarker said they are happy with the BNP chief’s treatment as she is cooperating with them, but the doctors can’t visit her regularly for their various preoccupations. “The director said doctors couldn’t meet Khaleda even after waiting till 4pm. His statement is inconsistent with that of Zilan Miah Sarker.”
He also alleged that Mahbubul Hoque mocked with Khaleda’s illness through his some remarks. “We strongly condemn and protest it.”
Earlier at a human-chain programme, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain warned the government that it will be held responsible if anything bad happens to her in custody.
“Our leader Khaleda Zia is sick. We would like to say she has the right to get bail under such a situation. She’ll be able to receive advanced treatment of her choice if she’s granted bail,” he said.
Leaders of Ducsu and All Party Students Unity (Apsu) of the 90s arranged the programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club, demanding the release of Khaleda Zia from jail.
Mosharraf recalled that Awami League could not stay in power for a long time after establishing one-party Baksal rule. “They’d to wander on the streets like political orphans for 21 years paying the price for destroying democracy.”
He alleged that the ruling party has again restored ‘Baksal rule’ unofficially. “I want to alert you that if you’re ousted this time, you’ll have to wander on the streets as political orphans three times more than the previous 21 years.”
The BNP leader said the government’s current anti-corruption drive will not succeed as it is conducted by an ‘unelected and unethical administration. “It’s not possible to eliminate the immoral acts by those who are staying in power unethically without people’s mandate.”
