Arrested person is 'serial rapist': RAB
The man who was arrested in connection with the rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student in Kurmitola was a serial rapist, said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

"The name of the arrested person is Mojnu. During primary interrogation, he confessed to his crime," said RAB Media Wing Director Sarwar Bin Kashem at a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon.

After making the arrest in Tongi of Gazipur, RAB produced him before the journalists at the briefing at about 2pm.

The victim's mobile phone set, charger and bag were also recovered from his possession.

“Hailing from Hatia of Noakhali, Mojnu had earlier violated physically challenged women and beggars,” said the RAB official.

A street hawker Mojnu became detached from his family after the death of his wife.

Earlier, police collected two CCTV footage around Kurmitola roads to identify the rapist.

A second year student of the DU was allegedly raped and tortured in Dhaka's Kurmitola area on January 5, just after she got down from the university bus.

The girl is now undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The incident sparked huge strong protest as DU students blocked Shahbagh intersection on Monday and gave the authorities a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest the culprit. They also stage demonstration on Tuesday.
