7 wholesalers jailed, fined for selling potato at over Tk 15 a kg
A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday jailed seven wholesalers and godown owners at Mohammadpur Krishi Market for selling potatoes at high price compared to the price fixed by the government.

A team of RAB-3 in cooperation of the Department of Agriculture Marketing, conducted the mobile court early Saturday afternoon. Executive Magistrate Polash Kumar Basu conducted the mobile court.

Following mobile court sentences, Polash Kumar Basu said the federal government has fixed each kilogram of potato at Tk 27 at the federal government cold storages, Tk 30 at the wholesale level, and Tk 35 in the retail market.

"Regardless of it, we have been receiving complaints that the wholesalers and godown stockists are selling potato at higher prices," he said.

Responding to the complaints, the RAB mobile court conducted a drive at the wholesale market of Mohammadpur Krishi Market. Through the raid, the magistrate found that potato was selling at Tk 40-45 a kg at the wholesale leve. It means that they selling potato at Tk 10-15 more a kg.

Later, the mobile court fined Messers Tanha Enterprise owner Shahabuddin Tk 50,000, in default, one month's jail; Mayer Doa Banijyalaya owner Messrs Momin Khan Tk 50,000, in default, one month's jail.

Besides, Messrs Munshiganj Banijyalaya owner Mohammad Liton was fined Tk 1 lakh, in default, three months' jail, MA Hossain of Messrs Allahar Dan Bhandar Tk 50,000, in default, one month's jail, Faruk Hossain of Messrs Manik Enterprise Tk 30,000, in default, a month jail, Md Hossain Babul of Messrs New Bikrampur Banijyalaya Tk 1 lakh, in default, three months' jail, and Shah Alam of Messrs New Shah Alam Tk 50,000, in default, one month's jail.
