40-km tailback on Dhaka-Ctg highway
The Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Sunday witnessed around 40 kilometers long tailback that caused immense sufferings to the commuters.
After completion of the Kanchpur, Meghna and Gumti 2nd bridges on the highway, it took just two hours to go to Dhaka to Cumilla, now its takes at least seven to eight hours due to the today's gridlock.
The traffic jam began since Friday afternoon and today it turned into severe situation.
Sources in Daudkandi Highway Police Station said renovation works began on Friday closing one side of Meghna bridge and vehicles were allowed to ply through just one lane that caused the traffic congestion.
Around 12:30pm, vehicles were seen stranded on the highway stretched from Shahidnagar of Daudkandi to both sides of Meghna bridge. Munshiganj's Gazaria bound vehicles, and Narayanganj-bound vehicles also experienced the jam.
Mohiuddin, a businessman, said, "I boarded bus from Cumilla around 6:00pm but stuck in the tailback till this afternoon."
Daudkandi Highway Police Station officer in-charge Sarker Md Abdullah Al Mamun said their efforts is on to normalize vehicular movements.
