2 drivers among 3 get life term
A Dhaka court has sentenced two drivers of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan and an assistant to life term imprisonment in a case filed over the deaths of college students Diya and Rajib in a road accident on the Airport Road in Dhaka last year.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Imrul Kayes delivered the verdict on Sunday afternoon in presence of the convicts.
The lifers are bus drivers Masum Billah and Jubayer Sumon, and their assistant Kazi Asad, who is now on the run. The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each. In default, they will have to suffer six months more in jail.
The court, however, acquitted bus owner Jahangir Alam and another assistant Enayet Hossain from the charges.
Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, both first year students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, were killed and nine others wounded as a bus of 'Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan' ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on July 29, 2018.
The tragic deaths sparked strong protest across the country as the students came out on the streets with their demands for safer roads and exemplary punishment to those responsible for the accident.
Diya's father Jahangir Alam, later, lodged a case with Dhaka Cantonment Police Station, in this connection.
