War criminal Azhar’s death sentence upheld
The Appellate Division on Thursday upheld the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 verdict that gave death sentence to war criminal and Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam.

A four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, delivered the verdict dismissing an appeal filed by Azhar.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has expressed his satisfaction over the judgement, while defence counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said they would file another plea seeking review of the judgement.

The ICT-1 sentenced the former Jamaat’s assistant secretary general to death on December 30, 2014, for crimes against humanity committed in Rangpur during the Liberation War.

He was found guilty of five of the six charges brought against him.

The former Jamaat leader filed the appeal against his conviction on January 28, 2015.
