Voting was fairly peaceful: EC secy
Election Commission (EC) thinks the first phase of the fifth upazila parishad elections to 78 upazilas has ended in an almost peaceful manner, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said.

“Voting took place at 5847 centers of 78 upazilas. Voting suspended at 28 centers due to numerous types of irregularities, but voting will be arranged for those centers at a later time,” Helal Uddin Ahmed told reporters at media center of Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Sunday (March 10).

However, voting at other centers took place peacefully, Helal Uddin Ahmed also told reporters.

EC secretary further said turnout of voters was satisfactory as far as we have learnt, but rate of presence is not yet known. Vote counting is underway.

Speaking about irregularities, he said two presiding and assistant presiding officers were arrested in Sirajganj. Returning and assistant returning officers were arrested in Lalmonirhat.

Apart from that, he added, more than 10 persons were sent to prisons after punishing them by the mobile courts.

This time, UP polls will be held in five phases at 492 upazilas.
