Sending Rohingyas to 3rd country no solution: UN expert
Sending Rohingyas to a third country is no solution to the problem, but returning to their homeland, said UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee.
Yanghee Lee made the remarks while addressing a press conference at a city’s hotel on Friday (January 25).
Lee said, “I went to Bhashan Char and observed the situation there. Bangladesh government set up infrastructure there. Discussion with Rohingyas regarding shift to the island is needed.”
Bhashan Char Island is, under Noakhali district, on the Bay of Bengal.
Rohingyas, as Yanghee Lee added, want to go back to their country. To do so, Myanmar has to create a conducive atmosphere to take them back to their land safely.
She urged world community to put pressure on Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation.
Lee arrived in Bangladesh on January 19 for a seven-day visit. Friday marks the last day of her official tour.
Yanghee Lee held meetings with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and other officials.
