Release of Jatri Kalyan Samity's secy gen demanded
Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) on Monday demanded immediate release of its Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury from jail.
The organization came up with the demand at a press briefing at the Jatiya Press Club.
The passenger welfare body also alleged that Mozammel was implicated in a false case, reports UNB.
Mozammel's wife Riju Akhter said police arrested his husband on Wednesday in an extortion case.
According to the case, a person called Dulal who works in transport sector, filed the case against him.
But, the plaintiff, Dulal, has already denied the allegation of extortion against Mozammel saying that he did not know Mozammel and Dulal did not give any extortion money to Mozammel, said Shamsuddin Chowdhury, central committee member of the organization, at the press brining.
"We thought Mozammel will be released after the statement from the plaintiff, but he has been shown arrested in an arms case," he added.
He also alleged that the arms case was filed in February against one Mozammel Haque Chowdhury where the address and the father's name of the accused were mentioned as unknown.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, Vice President of BJKS, said Mozammel Haque has been working for road safety with the organization for several years. He has been always vocal about Road Safety Act and also received threats many times for this reason.
Speaking as the chief guest, human rights activist advocate Sultana Kamal said, if speaking against anarchy and expressing concern becomes a punishable offence in the state then the government's claim of upholding democracy is questionable.
She also urged the authorities concerned to ensure safety of 'plaintiff' Dulal.
Chief coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolan Junaid Saki also spoke on the occasion.
