Rajshahi Sugar Mill reopens with huge loss
Rajshahi Sugar Mill has reopened the door shouldering the loss of crores of taka on Friday afternoon.
In the last year, 6,000 tons of sugar remained unsold in warehouse and the workers are to be paid about six months' salary.
Yet the authorities are buying sugarcane at the cost of Tk 10 more per maund.
Abdur Rauf Khan, Chief Engineer, Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation, formally inaugurated the threshing process of sugarcane this year.
Rajshahi Sugarcane Managing Director Ashfaqur Rahman presided over the programme where Sugarcane Farmers Samity President Yasin Ali, General Secretary Rafiqul Islam Ratan and the sugar factory workers Union President Afaz Uddin and general secretary Rafiqul Islam Ratan were also present.
It is learned from sugar mill authorities that sugarcane threshing target is estimated to be 1 lakh 10 thousand tonnes this year and it will be threshed for the next 67 days.
Managing Director Ashfaqur Rahman said 6 thousand tonnes of sugar worth Tk 50 crore remained unsold in the warehouse for two seasons.
“So the salary of the workers and employees of sugar mill could not be paid for 6 months till June-November this year. Loss is becoming heavier day by day.”
