Narcotics Control Bill, 2018 passed in JS
The Narcotics Control Bill, 2018 has been passed in the Jatiya Sangsad with provision of death penalty as maximum punishment for drug trading.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan moved the bill in the House on Saturday (October 27). The bill was unanimously passed by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
Placing the bill, the minister said the proposed bill will replace the Narcotics Control Act, 2004 in order to comply with the three international conventions.
The draft of the proposed bill was approved by the cabinet meeting on September 08 in 2018 in principle.
According to the bill, if anyone especially drug trader is found with more than 200 grams of yaba pills can be sentenced to death or life term imprisonment. However, if less than 100 grams of the drug is found in someone’s possession can be sentenced to minimum 5 years or maximum 10 years in prison.
On the other hand, in case of firming, producing or processing narcotics like cocaine with more than 25 grams can be punishable by death or life in prison. However, if less than 25 grams of the drug is found can be sentenced to minimum 2 years or maximum 10 years in prison.
