Music Festival at DU January 27-28
Music Department of the University of Dhaka is going to organize a two-day long Music Festival-2018 to be held on January 27-28. Prof Tumpa Samaddar, the Chairman of the department spoke about the festival at a press conference on Tuesday at The National Press Club.
She said, native and south Asian academicians and experts will perform classical music in the two day long festival. At least 200 students of Music Department will also perform in the program. The inaugural special song will be performed by 300 students, she added.
Guest artist Prof Alok Chattapadhya (Vocal), Prof Bishwajit Sahu (Tabla), Prof Shubhayu Sen Mazumder (Eshraj), Arup Dey (Tabla) and Sagata Mukharjee (Vocal) from India will perform in the festival. On the other hand Dr Chinthaka Prageeth Meddegoda (Vocal) from Sri Lanka will also perform in the classical festival.
Prominent Bangladeshi artist Dr Ashit Roy (Vocal) from Rajshahi University, Dr Rezwan Ali (Vocal) from Jagannath University, Anil Kumar Saha (Vocal) from Shanto Mariam University, Ashit Dey (Vocal) from University of Development Alternative, Sharnomoy Chakrabarti (Vocal) from Chattogram University, Shiuli Bhattacharya (Violin) from Govt Music University, Yusuf Ali Khan (Sarod), Murtaza Kabir Khan (Flute) and Firoz Khan (Sitar) will perform in the festival.
Assistant Prof Priyanka Gope, Assistant Prof Mohammad Soeb and Part Time Lecturer Rituporna Chakrabarti from Dhaka University will also perform in the two-day long festival.
Assistant Prof Azizur Rahman Tuhin said, this year only academicians will perform in the music festival. But the department has plan to involve talented non-academician artists next year.
Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will be present as the chief guest. Dr Adarsh Swaika, Deputy High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh will be present as special guest in the inaugural ceremony of the Music Festival.
DU Pro-VC (Education) Prof Dr Nasrin Ahmad, Pro-VC (Admin) Prof Dr Muhammad Samad and Dean of Arts Faculty Dr Abu Muhammad Delwar Hossain will be present as special guests.
S M Harun-or-Rashid, Executive Director of Bangladesh Television, Narayan Chandra Shil, Executive Director of Bangladesh Betar and Liakat Ali Laki, Executive Director of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will be present as special guests. Guest artist Prof Alok Chattapadhay and Dr Chinthaka Prageeth Meddegoda will conduct a musical workshops at R C Mazumder Arts Auditorium of the university.
Music Department of Dhaka University has been giving Nilufar Yasmin Memorial Award. This year Late Prof Dr Mridulkanti Chakrabarti and Classical Musician Pandit Modon Gopal Das are going receive the awards.
Music Department of Dhaka University will celebrate its Silver jubilee end of this year. After the introduction of this department in Dhaka University, later on Rajshahi University, Trishal Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Jagannath University and Chittagong University also have opened music department.
These universities have been teaching Folk songs, Classical songs, Tagor songs and Nazrul songs under its academic curriculum. Instruments, Musical Science and Technology, Musical Research, Western Music, Ethno Musicology, History of Music, Music Composition skills and Mass Communication also being taught to the students of the department.
On the other hand, DU's Music department has launched a course on western violin which is being conducted by a German teacher.
