Millions at risk of flooding as thaw begins
After days of freezing cold, heavy snowfall and biting blizzards, a big thaw is now under way in parts of the UK. And with the rising temperatures comes the risk of flooding for millions of people.

With temperatures set to reach as high as 9C (48F) in parts of England, dozens of flood warnings have been put in place for the North East and South West. The Environment Agency has put 16 warnings in place across England, meaning flooding is expected and people should take immediate action, reports Sky News.

There are 35 flood alerts in place across the UK - meaning people should be prepared - including six in Wales, where water levels are set to surge. Several schools across Wales will be closed on Monday, including some in Blaenau Gwent.

Rain falling on to snow and freezing overnight temperatures could also lead to treacherous driving conditions for many. Met Office yellow warnings for snow and ice have been extended across much of the UK, with warnings in Scotland lasting late into Monday evening.

Scientists at the University of Dundee are researching the benefits of geothermic piles, which are used to heat and power large buildings through plumbed underground pipes, almost as a "heated concrete".

Similar schemes exist in Holland and America to heat bridge surfaces and pavements, and Transport Scotland is supporting the university team.

A Transport Scotland spokeswoman said: "We are currently supporting research by the University of Dundee into the potential application of geothermal piles to help stabilize slopes near roads that would reduce the risk of landslips and consequential road closures, and also the transfer of heat to carriageways that would help mitigate the impact of snow and ice on the road surface.
