BNP lambastes Quader for Zafar Iqbal attack allegation
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday termed Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader's comment 'irresponsible' as the latter said BNP was involved with the terror attack on Dr Zafar Iqbal.

"It's completely an irresponsible statement of the ruling party general secretary over such a terrorist attack," BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told UNB when his attention was drawn to Quader's remark.

The BNP leader further said, "He (Quader) pointed finger at BNP when an investigation is going on into the incident. It's exposed they're trying to shift the incident to a different direction. That's why the real offenders remain untraced."

Earlier in the day, Obaidul Quader said the attack on Dr Zafar Iqbal was made by BNP-sponsored conspirators.

"It's true the attack is part of a plot, and BNP is patronising the conspirators," he said while distributing leaflets in the city's Gulistan area to make Awami League's scheduled March 7 public rally at Suhrawardy Udyan a success.

Fakhrul said those who tried to kill Dr Zafar Iqbal are surely the enemies of society. "We'd already strongly condemned the incident. Our party doesn't believe in any form of terrorism."

After the incident on Saturday, Fakhrul alleged that those who want to fish in troubled waters are behind the attack on the renowned writer.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) teacher Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal was attacked by a youth with a knife at a university programme on Saturday afternoon, leaving him injured.
