Low pressure in Bay of Bengal intensifies
A low pressure system has intensified in the Bay of Bengal and, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The Met Office has advised the Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports to hoist a Distant Cautionary Signal No. 1 in response to the weather system.

Forecasters say that the winter cold may intensify once the system disperses.

According to the long-term December forecast, the north, northeast and central areas of Bangladesh may experience one to two light (8-10 degrees Celsius) or medium (6-8 degrees Celsius) cold wave in the latter half of the month.

The national parliamentary election is to be held on December 30 amidst this forecasted cold wave.

Meteorologist Omor Farooq told bdnews24.com on Saturday that the deep low pressure system in the southeast Bay of Bengal and nearby areas has moved northwest.

It was 1,595 km southwest of Chattogram port, 1,520 km southwest from Cox’s Bazar port, 1,560 km south-southwest of Mongla port and 1,525 kilometres south-southwest from Payra port.

“It may move northwest and intensify,” Farooq said. “We have advised the Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports to issue Distant Cautionary Signal No. 1 due to the roughness of the sea.”

Fishing boats and trawlers have been advised not to venture into the deep see until the department issues further instructions.

According to the 24-hour forecast, some parts of Bangladesh’s river basin may experience light to medium fog from late night to the early morning.

Nighttime temperatures in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions are likely to remain largely unchanged. Night temperatures across the rest of the country may rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures may decrease slightly.
