Jaya to enact Supriya in Srijit's Chowringhee
Veteran Bengali film actress Supriya Devi, who reached legendary heights for her excellent portrayal of the protagonist Neeta in Ritwik Ghatak's cult film Meghe Dhaka Tara, died on January 26.
Within a week of her demise, reports confirm that popular Bengali classic Chowringhee, which got translated into a number of Indian as well as foreign languages, will again be brought alive on celluloid by National award winning Bengali filmmaker Srijit Mukherjee.
Acclaimed Bangladeshi actor Jaya Ahsan will play the role of Karabi Guha, previously played by Supriya Devi in the original film. About being casted in the Supriya Devi's character in Chowringhee, the popular actress of both Bengal said, "This is the first time I'll be working on a remake.
Also acting in a role played by the veteran Supriya Devi is such a huge honor for me. I have heard that the film will be based on the original Chowringhee, but set in the present time. I am very excited to work with such an amazing unit and a great screenplay."
This will be the first time Srijit's Match Cut Productions LTD will collaborate with Shree Venkatesh Films. The original film was based on a novel with the same title written by Shankar back in 1962. It is said to be the first novel in West Bengal that featured stories of the posh lifestyles of the upper class society, their parties in five star hotels, gossips about their lives and a life of an air hostess.
Later on, it was made into a motion picture in 1968. Author Mani Shankar Mukherjee, who writes under the pseudonym of better 'Shankar', expressed hope that Mukherjee would retain the spirit of the original novel.
Reportedly, the film will start its shooting from June. The project has a heavy weight cast with Prosenjit Chatterjee playing the role of Sata Bose originally played by Uttam Kumar, Jisshu Sengupta, Mamata Shankar, Anjan Dutta and Abir Chatterjee.
