Govt to improve maximum punishment for rape to death sentence
Law Minister Anisul Huq has said the federal government is contemplating raising the prevailing highest punishment of life-term imprisonment to death sentence for the crimes of rape.

Talking to a television set channel at Banani in the administrative centre on Wednesday morning, he said there is no way of ignoring the demand of people.

Terming the demand of death sentence for rapists, he said the demand is "very positive." "If the rapists are awarded death sentences, such heinous crimes will substantially go down in the society," he said.

In protest against the violence against women and growing incidents of rape in the united states, people from all strata of the society have already been demanding death sentences for rapists by hanging. The demand has strengthened further following the gang-rape of a housewife at Sylhet MC College hostel and organised rape of a housewife at Begumganj in Noakhali district.

Amid the demand from persons across the country, the Law Minister himself on Wednesday said that the federal government is actively considering to introduce death penalty for rape, rather than the prevailing life-term imprisonment.

Anisul Huq said it was observed that the convicts have a tendency to commit the same crimes appearing out of jail once their life sentences are over. So, the death sentence would reduce the rate of rape related crimes in the united states.
