Govt more likely to import rice on limited scale: Dr Razzaque
Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque Sunday said the federal government will import rice on a restricted scale when there is food crisis in the country, reports BSS.

"The government will need rice import decision on limited scale taking into consideration the damage of aus and aman because of the ongoing devastating flood and reviewing aman production", he said as the principle guest at an online seminar titled "Food Security in COVID-19 Situation: Is Bangladesh Facing Rice Deficit" in Dhaka.

Mentioning that the country has no fear of food shortage as all sorts of initiatives have been taken to minimise the crop loss by the floods, Dr Razzaque said if the yield of aman paddy in the country is damaged and the floods are prolonged, the federal government will import rice.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder spoke at the function as the special guest while Agriculture Secretary M Nasiruzzaman chaired the seminar organised by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI).

BRRI Director General Dr Shahjahan Kabir presented the keynote paper while senior secretary and planning commission member Dr Shamsul Alam attended the function as chief discussant.
