FIFA hoping to develop 'affordable' VAR
FIFA announced in Tuesday that it was reviewing the utilization of training video referee assistance (VAR) across the game with a view to simplifying it and which makes it less expensive for "all degrees of football".
The "Innovation and Excellence" working band of the world football body will present a "recommendation" for the implementation of the reform -- dubbed the "VAR 'light' concept" -- to FIFA and IFAB, the International Football Association Board which may be the guarantor of the laws of the game.
The report "aims to create more affordable VAR systems to allow the utilization of VAR at all degrees of the game".
"The working group recognized variable cost factors, talked about the potential top quality decrease and the minimum amount requirements for such a technology set up," FIFA said in a declaration. VAR is currently only set up in major competitions and leagues and has not been applied for the group level of the UEFA Countries League.
Come early july, the Women's Champions League only had VAR for the ultimate, a limitation that drew criticism from several players.
FIFA likewise said it was considering "the development of semi-automated offside technology to help make the review method for offside incidents seeing that efficient as possible".
It has also solicited the technology industry to come up with a way of bettering "the visualisation of close offside incidents".
