Digital Security Act: RU teacher freed on bail
Rajshahi University assistant professor Kazi Zahidur Rahman, who was simply arrested on June 18 for allegedly defaming the deceased Awami League leader Mohammad Nasim, was freed on bail on Thursday evening.

Rajshahi Central Jail jailor Masudur Rahman said they released Zahidur, assistant professor of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, at 6:00pm on Thursday after scrutinising his bail bond.

On August 23, a joint bench of Justice Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman of the High Court granted the bail, but Zahidur had not been immediately released as the bail document had not reached Rajshahi Jail authorities, said his legal professional Nurul Amin.

Previously June 18, police arrested Zahidur from his house at the university quarters at 2:00am, a day after AL leader advocate Tapas Kumar, a resident of Sagarpara in the town, filed a case against him under the Digital Security Act with the Motihar police station for allegedly defaming Nasim on Facebook.

Zahidur, a former information and research secretary of Narail district AL, was produced before a court later that day and was delivered to jail.

Zahidur allegedly criticised the AL leader on a Facebook post which he published on June 2, a day after Nasim was hospitalised.

But Zahidur deflected those claims, saying that he wrote those words on Facebook never to attack anyone personally, but to indicate the corruption in medical sector.

"I said this before and I'll say it again. I'll continue writing against corruption," he said.
