Dhaka city corporations for restricting private cars
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon said steps are being taken with other authorities concerned to restrict plying of private cars in north and south parts of the Dhaka city corporations.

The mayor made the remarks while inaugurating a program ‘World Car Free Day 2018’ in city’s Manik Mia Avenue on Saturday (Sept 22).

On the issue of limiting private cars on city roads, Khokon said, “There is already an existing law to limit private cars. DNCC and DSCC will hold a coordination meeting soon with other authorities concerned. Details on this matter like- how many private cars an individual can use or whether he/she needs one- will be discussed in the meeting and initiatives will be taken accordingly.”

Mentioning the disadvantages of using private cars, Khokon said, “There are many families in Dhaka with only three members but using five cars. IF each members of that family are using separate cars for themselves then it is not helping to reduce the unbearable traffic congestion in Dhaka.”

“Only 6 to 7 percent of city people use personal cars while the rest use either public transportation or walk to commute. So the small percentage of people is causing huge problem to rest of the people in Dhaka It cant go on like this and we have to introduce a system. If private car plying decreases then traffic jam will also decrease,” he said.

The DSCC mayor also said that the matter will presented before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after she returns from New York attending the General Assembly of UN.
