BNP hopes Jamaat will support its candidate in Sylhet
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday expressed hope that Jamaat-e-Islami will finally support BNP’s mayoral candidate in Sylhet city polls.

"There's no conflict in the 20-party. There's no possibility to get affected the unity of the alliance over a local government election like Sylhet city one. We all are united," he said.

Talking to reporters after a meeting, the 20-party alliance at BNP chairperson's Gulshan office, Fakhrul further said, "Hope, Jamaat will realise the country's current situation, and work together with other alliance partners for ensuring the victory of sheaf of paddy's candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury."

According to media reports, BNP's relation with its key alliance partner Jamaat has got strained as the Islamist party put a mayoral candidate in Sylhet City Corporation polls against the 20-party alliance's decision, UNB reports.

Despite BNP's request, Jamaat Sylhet city unit ameer Ehsanul Mahbub Zobayer has been in the race of the Sylhet city polls alongside 20-party mayoral runner Ariful Haque.

BNP standing committee member and 20-party coordinator Nazrul Islam Khan said the 20-party leaders urged the Jamaat representative Mobarak Hossain to extend support to Ariful Haque. "He (Mobarak) said he will inform the party high-ups about it. Hope, they'll take the right decision in favour of the alliance at the right time."

The meeting also worked out the strategy for carrying out electioneering in favour of the alliance's single mayoral candidates in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city polls.

It also strongly protested and condemned the recent attack on LDP president Oli Ahmed's motorcade at Chandina, Cumilla.
